Volume 8, Issue 2: Manage Opposition & Criticism

Life isn’t one long race, but lots of short ones. Every day has it’s own set of things to achieve and challenges to face and they vary from day to day. To be successful is to keep plugging away – we all need perseverance.

A manager once addressed two thousand members of his firm’s sales force during a sales convention.
“Did the Wright brothers ever quit?” he asked his staff. “No!” they responded. “Did Charles Lindbergh ever quit?” “No!” they shouted. “Did Lance Armstrong ever quit?” “No!”

As a business owner or a department head, are you allowing external and internal influences to write your future? Volume 7, Issue 9: Growing People

Pastor Joel Osteen tells this story - An observer was watching a fisherman having a very successful day. He caught many large fish, however released the large and kept the smaller fish. When questioned, the fisherman’s response was I only have a 10 inch frying pan. If your vision is small, you will limit your life. You need to enlarge the vision - prepare larger containers and grow people with greater capacity. That way you will see increase in your own life as well as theirs.

Volume 7, Issue 8: Leading People

I’ve met and dealt with many leaders of both small and large organizations over the years. Those that stood out to me and were seeing real results were leaders who kept in touch with their people. Lachlan Murdoch, elder son of media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, once said, “Some of our line employees have developed innovations, in their own time, that have saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars. These were things that our senior management would never have thought of.”

Let these innovations set your mind going in your business.

My skull is ringing!!
Nokia is seeking a patent for tattoos that vibrate to let people know they have calls on their mobile phones. The technology would enable tattoos to receive magnetic waves emitted by mobiles. These tattoos would generate a ‘perceivable stimulus’ to alert people to calls, messages or batteries running low.

Texting a crappy nappy!
A new monitoring system built into baby clothes sends emails or text messages to parents warning them that a nappy change might be needed! It can also detect a baby’s heart rate and temperature. Sold in the US for $140, it detects moisture on the baby’s skin which indicates the nappy has begun to leak. A thread in the fabric senses electrical signals on the skin, when the skin is moist, the signal is stronger.

Volume 7, Issue 4: Don't Stay Small

There’s a certain species of fish that when you place them in a tiny aquarium, they stay small. However if you place that same fish in a large body of water, it will grow to its intended size. You and I are the same. If our thinking is influenced by an environment that’s limited and small, we will stay small. If we get around people who think big, dream big and plan big then we will grow to our intended size.
