Define Your Uniqueness
Concord is a wonderful
little pocket in Sydney, with its tree lined streets, federation style
homes and bustling café strip. It is an ideal place to take family and
friends on the weekend to have breakfast or lunch away from the city
crowds.
The success of many of
the cafés and restaurants in Concord is that they each have a uniqueness
about them, and each offer something different to the people who visit
the area. In Concord there is:
-
Organic food café
-
Italian restaurant
-
Pizzeria
-
Franchise coffee
and cake shop
-
Portuguese chicken
shop
-
Italian cake and
coffee shop
-
Specialty roasting
house
-
Middle eastern
restaurant
-
Thai noodle house
-
Fish shop
Now there would be
about three other establishments that do pretty poorly, judging by the
lack of people eating in their establishments. These are:
Why? It is because
these are ‘me too’ operators who have tried to mimic the successful
established businesses, and set up a shop that offers the same thing.
Does this sound like your business?
Here is a killer
question – What makes your business so different to everyone else?
Here might be some of
your answers;
-
Our customer
service (Yeah, says who)
-
We have been in
business for 20 years (So what, you must be too old)
-
We are the cheapest
(I am sure someone can be cheaper)
-
We have a large
range (This would probably confuse people)
-
We have the big
brands (So does everyone else)
In a world where there
is more choice, more competition, and the advances of the internet, if
your business does not define it’s uniqueness in a crowded marketplace,
it will no longer exist. This is the reason why you are discounting to
survive! Not because of competition, or the economy is putting downward
pressure on spending.
Think we are over
exaggerating? Ask yourself the question again – What makes your business
so different to everyone else? Now the real questions!

Your Unique Selling
Proposition
If you are struggling
to define your uniqueness, then your sell gross margin will be massively
less than your original gross margin. Your sales would also be down,
because the market is rejecting your offer. Houston we have a problem!
