How We Do Anything Is How We Do Everything

Previously, we’ve talked about who motivates you, the business leader? We discussed having a coach that is unbiased towards your business and keeps you accountable, as well as motivated. In turn providing you the means to motivate and keep your team accountable.

Let’s ask ourselves this question or perhaps an observation or statement:

“How we do anything is how we do everything.” Growing up I often wondered why the military had to have their uniforms pressed, brass shiny as new and boots polished to the point of being a mirror. The big one for me was as they rose, their first job was making the bed with hospital corners, no wrinkles and perfection was sought. Then to be inspected! Crazy, right? Wrong, the military lives and breathes the statement above. If a soldier can start the day accomplishing a task with perfection, no matter how small, then each task from that point on will reflect their attitudes towards getting it right. Plus, a “job well done” builds confidence.

The military also knows the golden rule of business when it comes to your team - “You get respect, when you inspect what you expect.”

Even after a tough day, a soldier can come back to his bunk with a sense of pride and a reminder of how his day started - striving for perfection.

Simple philosophy, but such a powerful training tool. What do you and your team do first thing in the morning that will set the day? Do you seek perfection from the very start, or do you and the team, roll in around opening time and first duty of the day is a cup of coffee - just to get you through the morning?

Think about how you treat your team, both in the good times as well as the challenging times. Is your approach consistent with excellence towards training better people, are you reserved, (firm but fair) teaching your team how to handle all situations? Or are you the “seagull manager”, fly in, squark and squabble then dump excrement all over the place and fly off, leaving those behind confused and still squabbling over nothing?

What are you like in your personal life compared to your professional life? Is there consistency? How we do anything is how we do everything. Food for thought huh.

To Your Business Success

Cheers
