Activity Vs Results

Have you ever had staff that are in early, busy all day and leave late? The impression is they are busting their buns for your business, but in reality you sit back and think “What do they do all day - what have they actually accomplished?” Yes, plenty of activity, but where is the result? On the flip side, this team member probably thinks they are doing an amazing job for you and would be shocked you think otherwise!

Let’s look at your business when dealing with a customer or client - you get paid on results/ solutions and completed works, right? So shouldn’t this be the case for your team?

Your staff must understand that any activity that does not achieve a result is a waste of time, money and opportunity! Sadly, many people regard their value to the business in direct proportion to the activity they have generated. This is why often you’ll hear “The company must really love me - I really go the extra mile. I was here at the crack of dawn and worked through till midnight - wow, I am a legend!”

In reality, as a business owner, do you really care if he/she spent all that time producing a zero result? Sounds harsh, but it’s your dime and frankly you’re better off giving it to the staff member and suggesting they take the day off - at least they won’t lose any opportunities. In reality, people actually want to do the right thing and deliver results for their employer - they just need to be shown what’s expected.

So what do we do? Simply this - you systemise the business to results-driven tasks and train your people. Make your team members aware of exactly what’s expected, what the time frames are, what the support will be, who they are responsible to, who and what they are responsible for ... and then continue to train the heck out of them! I love that old saying “What if I train them and they leave?” The response is “What if you don’t and they STAY!!”

When reviewing your team’s ability to achieve results, you’ll have 4 main categories:

  • Committed and Competent
  • Uncommitted and Competent
  • Committed and Incompetent
  • Uncommitted and Incompetent
