“Leadership is Influence.” - John Maxwell

Ghandi had incredible influence that reached beyond his life span and beyond the nation. He understood himself and others. As a young teen he had low self esteem and was reported to be shy and his young bride had difficulty accommodating to his impatient, jealous and demanding outbursts. He failed medical school but later passed a law degree. Clearly, Ghandi had some significant fear barriers but clearly he recognised these issues and overcame them.

Through some quite tumultuous years personally and, at a time of great world instability Ghandi grew as a person and took on the big issues in his beloved India. His understanding of human behaviour, his passion to help the poor and oppressed and his ingenious ideas for peaceful protest such as the Salt March spoke loudly. He could see the problem, he knew how to fix it and he led others to the answer. He communicated this to the masses and partnered with a nation. His goal was Self Rule for India and he succeeded.

Here are 3 ways to increase your influence

Understand yourself and others.

Improve your Relationships. Fear causes us to erect barriers. Watch for your flash points. Reflect on why. Identify the triggers, be bold and deal with them. Rationalise those irrational assumptions.

Selfishness causes us to focus on self instead of others. We are all selfish but we can do something about it. It takes a decision to everyday focus on someone other than our selves. It’s a refreshing change. Try it. Offer to help your busy up line manager. Solve someone’s problem. Do something nice for someone on your team and watch their reaction.

You cannot give what you do not have. Grow yourself, grow others and grow your organisation.

Success is knowing your purpose in life, knowing why you were born with that talent, with that passion, with your personality type. Success is growing to your maximum potential, and doing and creating things that benefit others.

You are successful when you work hard to better yourself.  You are significant when you work hard to better others.

Navigate

There are those who can see the problem ahead and avoid it. There are those who can experience the problem and fix it. There are those who cannot see the problem or fix it and they are overwhelmed. A leader is one who sees more than others see, farther than others see, before others see.

Experience - been there did that
Success - been there did that successfully
Responsibility - I’m willing to take others on the trip
Communication - Encouraging - honest - continual
Partnership - we go together - we help each other
