Pillar 1: The Mindset of a
Successful Business Owner
…..So I typed a 140
page business plan, which repeated
everything about 5 times, on how
Harvey Norman could improve their
computer business. At this time,
computer’s were located next to the
toasters and kettles at the back of
the store, and was not seen as a
profit driver of the business. It
was doing around $12 million in
sales for the group a year, and was
only around 3% of total sales.
I got a phone call
from Gerry a couple of days later;
“Tony I’ve read your
business plan. First of all you have
repeated yourself 5 times, and your
spelling is atrocious’ Gerry stated
bluntly ‘however, I like what you
have to say, come work for me”.
Well, I was knocked
off my feet. I just wanted to be a
consultant, who writes a report, and
gets paid for it. Not actually do
the work. But I took up his offer,
and worked at Harvey Norman for the
next 9 years. In that time as
General Manager of Computers and
Communications, my team grew the
sales from $12 million, to $565
million. Quite a feat, some might
say, and as I do presentations now,
people are amazed by this. At the
time, I really started to believe
that Gattari was a self made
success.
Like many people, I
measured success by how much I was
making, the number of deals that I
made, what people said about me, how
many houses I owned, the number of
countries that I visited traveling
first class, and staying at the
finest hotels. Yeah not only did I
think I was a self made success; I
acted like one as well. On top of
this, if it wasn’t my idea, it was
not a good idea. Only the ideas of
Gattari were gold.
“Be wise enough not
to wear yourself out trying to get
rich. Your money can be gone in a
flash, as if it had grown wings and
flown away like an eagle”
Proverbs 23:4
Now here I am still
coughing blood.
The long hours, the
relentless travel, dining out,
drinking, and smoking had caught up
with me. But I was Gattari, this
will pass, because admitting defeat,
means admitting failure. Admitting
failure meant admitting that I was
human.

The Australian Newspaper
“The man credited
with tightening Harvey Norman’
extraordinary grip in the retail PC
market, Tony Gattari is now selling
his secrets.”
James Kirby - Gerry Harvey Biographer
Gerry Harvey - Business Secrets of Harvey Norman's Retailing Mastermind
"Straightforward, passionate, optimistic and an enthuser on a grand scale. Tony Gattari, the young salesman credited with driving the Harvey Norman Group to dominance in computer sales, typifies the Harvey Norman style: straightforward, passionate, optimistic and an enthuser on a grand scale."
The Australian Financial Review
"Tony Gattari, who flourished as a computer retailer in the 1990's, but failed as an online entrepreneur, has resurfaced as a motivational speaker and business adviser. He said his internet misfortune made him better placed to give advice. Computers made up just 5 per cent of Harvey Norman sales when Mr. Gattari joined in 1991. When he stepped down nine years later, the division was turning over $565 million a year, or 30 per cent of the franchise's total sale."
The Western Australian
The Western Australian Tony Gattari Interview with Keith McDonald “I’m not into motivation, I’m into action because a lot of people can get really hyped up but what happens is the feeling goes and the key to running a business is you’ve actually got to change things in order for the result to change.”
David Green - Finance Director - Brandwave
"I spent an hour looking at your book Saturday morning. I read the front and back covers, the testimonials, the foreword and chapter 1.1. I didn’t get any further because I kept going over chapter 1.1 and highlighting it because it’s such a good introduction to the book. It’s very well written and puts everything that will follow into great perspective. Every other book I can think of motivates the reader to succeed at all costs but you rightly put first things first in a meaningful and manly way. Thanks for letting me read it!"
Michael Bridge - Managing Director - Outdoor Kitchen Solutions

both done a great job with this
book. You have covered so many
business fundamentals and made it
really simple to understand. I like
the God factor mentioned through the

being in business was bad. Through
reading this book I have been
inspired to look to God in all my
decisions. I trust you will have
lots of success with this book. I
have already purchased 2 copy’s for
myself and will be recommending it
highly to others."

"I read the first red book
(Pillars of Business Success) on the
weekend and found it so true and
down to earth. I'm going to start
using the 'Stock is Cash' principle
today, and I like the bit about
Christians are way too nice and
scared to give feedback."
Steve Prescott - steveprescott.com
"Do
think you will get good results if
your mindset stinks? Do you
constantly remind yourself of what
is wrong with your current situation
rather than what is great about your
current situation? What is great is
that your reading this, so you must
be a person that is on verge of
something great." Read

"I loved your book The Pillars of Business Success. I couldn't believe the Biblical references so I had to go get my bible of the shelf and just see for myself if they really related & guess what they did. What a wonderful book we have in the bible and how much it is relevant in our day to living. What away to build a business. I really like 2 Chronicles 1:11-12 "You have asked for wisdom and knowledge so that you can rule my people, over whom I have made you king. I will give you wisdom and knowledge. And in addition, I will give you more wealth". I brought your book at one of your seminars. I went to get some knowledge and encouragement and I came away with a lot more. Thankyou for dedicating your time so people like me can feel they can achieve the task that is set for them."
Nathan Higgins - Gifts & Living
"I feel that I don't know how to
deal with money, I actually don't
like dealing with money. 2 weeks
previous to this I felt God say to
go to this christian book shop and
have a look at some books. So I went
there and I didn't know what I was
looking for but someone recommended
to read your book "The Pillars to
Business Success". So I ordered the
book and when I received it I was
blown away. I have read alot of
books on business and this one blew
me away. There is so much down to
earth information which is
practical. It has inspired me to put
certain structures into my company".
Trevor Gray - Workshop Manager - Ballina RV & Caravan Centre
"As a novice in the area of business I found the “Pillars of Business Success” book to confirm for me the practices and procedures that my employer was teaching me, and what I was doing by instinct to be right. After giving my employer a copy of the book I saw him make adjustments and changes in the way the business was run; which in turn benefited the business and gave a better understanding as to how the business was performing. Thanks again for your faith book".
Scott Fittler - The Meating Place
"I have read countless books and articles but not until I read your book have I felt that the tools that I needed to live my best life as God intended are truly real and available to me. I picked up your book only reading the title and flicking through a few pages in the store before purchasing it. It wasn't until I got it home that I saw that it was written with the biblical influence. A little intrigued I began. Fantastic! Wow what an empowerment, so many ideas so much to do! Finally Tony a heart felt thankyou to you and Shaun on this wonderful piece of work."
Leisa Williams - Director - Little Taks
