Navigating Your Business to Victory

The team will look to its leader every day for direction, experience, confidence, inspiration, and vision. It's vital to the success of the organisation that you – the leader – give them what they are looking for. A falter in confidence will rattle down the chain of command and cause the team to ask some tough questions. Don't let that happen. Skill yourself daily in your leadership ability. Grow and learn all you can to build your self-confidence because you are a great leader!

John Maxwell on leadership offers multiple tools with which we can fine tune our leadership ability. One such skill he calls the law of navigation. This law or principle is best described as someone who knows how to chart the course, who knows how to take the company to where it needs to go.

Navigation requires many steps some of which include planning, strategy, adjustment, communication of the plan and a loyal team to make it happen.

Winston Churchill was a crusty old fellow by all accounts but he had an incredible ability to navigate. I am quite sure his resolute conviction in his own decisions could have been quite frustrating to some people that may have held a difference of opinion. But his indomitable stubbornness was, I believe, a key part of his leadership skill that inspired a nation, the Allied forces and ultimately, won Britain the war. He knew exactly what needed to happen and when. He was the navigator of England's victory. He ensured there was meticulous planning, he built strategy with wise council from his team, he made adjustments to the plan and strategies as new challenges arose, he communicated the plan with inspirational vigour and this resulted in his team uniting behind him. The rest as they say is history.

Have you checked your navigation charts (the business plan) recently? Are you on course? What adjustments need to be made? Is your team behind you 100%? Is anyone undermining your leadership causing a division in the ranks? Can the situation be resolved? What do you need to do next?
